The New Higher Education Imperative
Universities worldwide are under increasing pressure to prove their value to society. Beyond research and teaching, institutions are expected to foster civic responsibility, community engagement, and student leadership. Students themselves want education that goes beyond theory—real experiences that make a difference in the world. Yet, while service-learning and civic engagement are powerful pedagogies, most faculty receive little formal training in how to design, implement, and sustain such initiatives. As a result, projects are often ad-hoc, short-lived, or disconnected from learning outcomes, leaving both students and communities underserved. The CESLP programme, designed by GIE-Ed, addresses this gap. It provides a structured pathway for educators and program leaders to integrate community engagement into curricula in ways that are impactful, inclusive, and sustainable.
Identified Gap in Faculty Training
- Despite institutional commitments to community engagement, most universities lack systematic preparation for faculty in:
- Embedding service-learning into course design and assessment.
- Building reciprocal, long-term partnerships with communities.
- Measuring and evidencing civic and social impact.
- Facilitating intercultural, inclusive, and sustainability-driven projects.
- This gap limits both the effectiveness of civic engagement strategies and the transformative potential of higher education.
